Another trip to Merseyside is required for Sunderland’s Joel Hassan this Sunday as he beat last year’s national champion to book his place in the quarter-finals.

Joel reached this stage last year but has shown he has improved vast amounts and will be looking to go further this year. To do that though he will once again have to beat a national champion as he boxes Benjamin Vaughan of King’s Heath who also won his weight category last year.

No matter what happens this Sunday (10th) though, Joel must be respected for his fantastic achievement last Sunday. Beating Patrick Birkenhead is no easy task, and something that in last year’s competition no one managed to do. Joel took the fight to him though and displayed just why he is regarded as such a special prospect.

Joel said: “I am buzzing because I know I am just a couple of steps away from winning the ABA’s now. My fight (with Birkenhead) was a very tough fight we were both good boxers and both wanted to win.

“I was really happy to beat last years winner because he was a tough fighter and to beat him you had to be tough and mostly fit. I know I fight a national champion again this Sunday but like I said before my last fight, to be the best you’ve got to beat the best.”

The quarter-finals take place at Everton Park Sports Centre and Joel will be joined by his stable mate Reece Amir. The other Sunderland boxer in the competition finally gets the chance to show what he can do after walking over to this stage due to no opponents in his class and weight.

Amir will meet Bilal Ahmed from Meir in the class 3, 66kg quarter-final. However, they will not be joined by Jamie Cockburn. The young boxer, who was competing in his first major tournament, was beaten last Sunday by Kirby’s Kamran Butt.

Jamie boxed very well in a tight contest though and he should take huge credit for getting so far.
