Sunderland ABC boxer Jake Slater lost his first senior fight in Scotland last week, in a Scotland vs England event.
McKeown is the lightweight European number three but Jake held his own and did very well on the counter despite this being his first outing as a senior.
The show was the first ever amateur boxing event to be held in the traditionally-proffessional boxing venue of St. Andrews Sports Club. The aim of the show was to promote the talent coming through for the 2014 Commonwealth games which will be held in Glasgow.
Slater said of his performance: “I got beat but i thought i boxed very well and so did the England coach. I always knew it was going to be hard fighting a Scottish, European number three, in Scotland with Scottish judges.
“However, looking at the positives I handled him very well and boxed clever and thought I had won the fight.”
Sadly it wasn’t to be for Jake buthe must look forward now as he prepares for the ABA’s. Last year at junior level Jake won the national title and from there earned himself Tri-Nations gold and trials for the Team GB development squad.
After missing out on the development squad Slater will now to once again capture the regional ABA title which gets underway at Newbiggin Leisure Centre this Saturday – 3rd March.
