Mixed emotions for Carlo Geraldi

Carlo Geraldi is just one win away from being crowned English ABA national champion.

The minor-class 36kg boxer has received a bye through the semi-finals after also receiving a bye through the quarter-finals.

Despite the fantastic achievement for the 11 year-old, there is mixed emotions for Carlo.

He said: “Obviously I am over the moon, being one win away from becoming the number one in England will be amazing but at the same time I am devastated because I really wanted to box.”

The bye means Carlo will not join team-mate Connor McCulloch in the semi finals, which are being contested this weekend in Manchester.

There is good news for Carlo though as his final will be contested in the North East on the 3rd March at Newbiggin Leisure Centre. The final will be contested during the regional senior ABA championships and it will mean Geraldi will have plenty of home support.

Geraldi was last night sparring in the Sunderland ABC gym on Mount Road, The Barnes with boxers from Monktown Boxing club from Dublin, Ireland. The Irish boxing club have been in Sunderland since Tuesday and have had sparring sessions with both Sunderland ABC and Spennymoor ABC and were holding a training session at the Olympian Boxing Gym in Rhyope today.

Carlo said the experience was very good and has helped him prepare for the final.

“I know I will win the final because I am feeling fit, sharp and the best I have been in a long time.” Said Carlo.
