McCulloch progresses to the ABA semi final

Sunderland ABC’s Connor McCulloch progressed to the national ABA semi final after defeating Joseph Shaw in Manchester on Saturday.

The 50kg fighter will now compete in Saturday’s semi final against Rotunda’s Daniel Kyffin, which will also be held in Manchester.

There was some controversy in McCulloch’s quarter-final though, as his opponent was disqualified.

Connor said: “I don’t know what he got disqualified for. He kept getting warned for something, but whatever it was he must not have stopped doing it because the referee stopped it.”

The Hylton Lane boxer went on to add: “He may have been disqualified but I was seven points up at the time so I had earned my win. I feel amazing about being in the semi’s and being just two wins away from being the national champion.

“I feel confident I can do this as Shaw was a really tough opponent on paper having won ten of his 11 fights so far.”

Connor is hoping to win the national title at his first time of asking; he had only had two fights prior to the ABA’s but clearly this has not hindered his progression as victory on Saturday will take him into the final and just one win away from being number 1 in England.
